24/7 Emergency Electrician in Kansas City, MO
Most calls that come in after dark are one of two things: the power company has a problem, or your house does. Those need very different phone calls, and the difference is usually something you can check from where you are standing. Here is how to tell — and what is genuinely worth waking someone up for.
Is this Evergy, or is this your house?
Generally, Evergy owns the line running to your house and the meter on the wall. The mast the line lands on, the panel, and every circuit past it are yours. So if the whole street is dark, that is Evergy — report it on their outage map and do not pay anyone to stand in your yard. If your house is dark and the neighbors have lights, start at your own panel. The awkward middle case is the one worth knowing: half the house dark, or lights running oddly bright in one room and dim in another. That is the signature of a lost neutral on the utility side, it pushes voltage too high on one leg, and it destroys electronics while you are working it out. Kill the main breaker and call Evergy first.

What an emergency call costs in Kansas City
Most contractors won’t tell you what sets the price until they’re standing in your house. Here’s what we look at, and which parts actually move the number.
| Job | Relative cost | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Phone triage | Free | Describe what you are seeing. Around half the calls we take end here, with you turning off one breaker and sleeping on it. |
| Diagnostic visit, business hours | Baseline | We find the fault and give you a flat price to fix it before anything starts. |
| Diagnostic visit, after hours | Higher | Nights, weekends and holidays carry a higher call-out. We tell you the number on the phone, not on your doorstep. |
| Repair at the outlet or fixture | Baseline | A failed device, a burned connection, a backstabbed receptacle that finally let go. |
| Repair at the panel | Higher | A failed breaker, a loose or burned lug, a bus that has been arcing. |
| Temporary make-safe | Varies | Where a full repair needs daylight, parts or a permit, we isolate the fault, restore what is safe to restore, and come back. |
Nothing gets done at an emergency rate that did not need doing at an emergency rate. If the honest answer is that it can wait until Tuesday, that is the answer you get.
What to Expect
Make it safe first
If you smell burning, see scorching, or hear buzzing from the panel, turn off the main breaker if you can reach it safely and step away. If anything is actually burning, that is a 911 call, not an electrician call.
Call and describe it
A real member of the crew picks up. We will ask what is dark, what still works, and what you can smell or hear — that usually narrows it down before anyone gets in a truck.
Rule out the utility
Whole street dark, or half your house behaving strangely, and you are calling Evergy, not us. We will say so.
Find the fault
If it is on your side, we trace it. Tripping breakers, burned connections and failed devices all look the same from the hallway and are not the same repair.
Make safe, then repair
Sometimes those are the same visit. Sometimes the right call is to isolate the circuit tonight and do the real repair properly in daylight, with a permit if it needs one.
Questions We Get in Kansas City
What counts as an electrical emergency?
A burning or fishy smell near the panel or an outlet, visible scorching, buzzing or crackling from the panel, a breaker that trips again immediately after reset, a warm or discoloured outlet or switch plate, water reaching electrical equipment, or half the house dark while other lights burn unusually bright. Those do not wait. A single dead outlet, one light out, or a breaker that tripped once and has held since will keep until morning, and we will tell you so.
Half my house has no power. Is that my panel?
Usually not. A house is fed by two legs, and losing one drops roughly half the circuits. If that happened without a breaker tripping, and especially if some lights are unusually bright while others are dim, it points at a lost neutral or a lost leg on the utility side. Shut off the main breaker and call Evergy — the overvoltage on the surviving leg is what damages appliances and electronics.
Do you charge more at night?
Yes, after hours costs more than a Tuesday morning, and we tell you the figure on the phone before we come out. We also tell you honestly when the problem can wait until Tuesday morning, which is most of the time.
My breaker keeps tripping. Can I just leave it off?
Leaving it off is the safe choice, and it is the right one overnight. A breaker that trips is doing its job — something on that circuit is drawing more than it should or there is a fault in the wiring. What is not safe is resetting it repeatedly, and what is dangerous is replacing it with a larger one.
Do you actually answer the phone at 2am?
A member of the family does. We are a small shop, not a dispatch center, so you reach somebody who can tell you whether it is serious and who will be on the crew that comes out.
Do you serve the whole metro after hours?
We are based in the Northland at 9000 NE 97th Terrace and are licensed in Kansas City and Liberty, Missouri and in Johnson County, Kansas. Distance affects how fast we can be there, so call and we will tell you honestly how long.
