Two things that are only true in Independence
Unlike Kansas City, Independence runs a panel job on different rails: your power comes from the city’s own utility, and the inspector is working from a newer code book than Kansas City’s. Both change how the day goes.
Your electricity comes from Independence Power & Light, the city’s own utility, not Evergy — so the meter pull and the reconnect are scheduled with IPL, on IPL’s calendar. And Independence adopts the 2023 National Electrical Code, where Kansas City is still on the 2017. Six years of code separates two cities twelve miles apart, and it decides which circuits need arc-fault and ground-fault protection when your panel is replaced. A contractor who works mostly in Kansas City may quote you the wrong book.
Signs an Independence panel is due
- Breakers trip when two big loads run together. On a 100 amp or smaller service that is usually the service running out, not a bad breaker. A bigger breaker is the wrong fix.
- A warm or buzzing breaker, or a scorched smell at the panel. That is heat at a loose or burned connection. Call the same day rather than waiting for it to trip.
- Lights dim or surge across the whole house. When many circuits flicker at once the problem is at the service connection, not one fixture. Sometimes it is on the utility side, and then the fix is a call to Independence Power & Light, not a new panel. We check which before quoting.
- A fuse box, or Federal Pacific or Zinsco on the label. Fuse boxes are common through central Independence, and FPE and Zinsco are the brands insurers and home inspectors ask about most. Our old panel brands guide shows how to spot them.
- No open spaces, or two wires under one breaker. Both mean circuits were added over the years without adding capacity.
