Why It Matters Here

Old panels replaced the way Blue Springs now inspects them

Nearly half of Blue Springs was built in the 1970s and 80s, and a panel that came with the house is now roughly 40 to 55 years old. Panel calls in houses that age are usually one of three things: a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel an insurer has asked about, a 100 or 150 amp service that has run out of headroom, or a panel with no space left for the charger, the hot tub or the finished basement.

Panels from the 1970s and 80s were sized for a house with a gas furnace and no second refrigerator. The earliest Blue Springs subdivisions were also wired during the years aluminum wiring was used, about 1965 to 1973; we check for it at the panel, and if it is there the usual fix is connectors rated for aluminum at each connection, not a rewire. And since June 1, 2026, Blue Springs permits electrical work to the 2023 National Electrical Code, while Kansas City is still on the 2017 edition. The newer code asks for ground-fault protection in more places, which shows up as breakers on a panel quote, so we price to the code your permit falls under. We pull that permit from Codes Administration at 903 W. Main Street.

Warning Signs

Signs a Blue Springs panel is due

  • Federal Pacific or Zinsco on the label. The two brands insurers and home inspectors ask about most, and common in houses from the 1970s and 80s. Our old panel brands guide shows how to recognize them.
  • No open spaces left. A 1980s panel filled up the first time a basement was finished. A sub-panel is sometimes the answer, a bigger service when the load has grown too.
  • Breakers trip when two big loads run together. The dryer and the air conditioner, or a space heater in the garage. Often a sign the service is at its limit, not that one breaker is weak.
  • A warm or buzzing breaker, or a scorched smell at the panel. Heat at a loose or burned connection. Call the same day rather than waiting for it to trip.
  • Warm outlets or switch plates in a home from 1965 to 1973. Those years overlap single-strand aluminum branch wiring. The panel is where we see it first, and the fix is connectors rated for it, not a straight swap of the device.
  • You are adding an EV charger, hot tub or a shop circuit. A load calculation decides whether the service can carry it. Blue Springs is on Evergy, so the EV charger rebate can apply to the charger.
What Moves the Price

What a panel job costs in Blue Springs

Every job gets a flat price once we have seen it, before any work starts. These are the things that move it, and which way.

What drives the cost of Panel Upgrades in Blue Springs, MO
JobRelative costWhat drives it
Panel repair Lowest A failed or buzzing breaker, a loose or burned lug, a double-tapped breaker a home inspector flagged. Fixed once we know why it happened.
Like-for-like panel replacement Baseline Same service size, new panel and breakers. The usual answer for a Federal Pacific or Zinsco, or a panel that is worn out or full.
100 or 150 → 200 amp service upgrade Higher New panel, meter socket and service entrance conductors, with the meter pull booked through Evergy. The job most 1970s and 80s houses end up needing once a charger or a hot tub arrives.
Sub-panel for a basement, garage or shop Varies with distance When the service has capacity and only the panel is full. The feeder run decides this one more than the panel does.
Aluminum branch wiring found at the panel Add-on Connectors rated for aluminum at the panel and at each device, or new copper where it makes sense. Priced after we have seen how much of the house it covers.
Grounding and bonding brought up to date Included Part of every service upgrade: ground rods, the water pipe bond and a proper grounding electrode conductor, checked on every panel change.

One flat price after we have looked at the panel, the meter and the grounding. Evergy’s meter appointment usually sets the install date, not our schedule. Our Kansas City panel cost guide walks through what moves each of these rows.

How It Goes

What to Expect

01

Look at the whole service

Panel, meter socket, service conductors and grounding. In a 1970s house we also look at what the branch wiring is made of.

02

Repair or replace, honestly

If a breaker or a lug is the problem, we fix that. If the panel is the problem, we say so and show you why.

03

Permit through Blue Springs

Pulled from Codes Administration; the work is inspected to the 2023 code, and the quote is built to it.

04

Meter pull with Evergy

We book the disconnect and reconnect and tell you the outage window before the day.

05

Install and inspection

Power off for a few hours, every circuit labeled as it goes back on, and we meet the inspector.

FAQ

Questions We Get in Blue Springs

How much does an electrical panel replacement cost in Blue Springs?

A repair is the least involved, and a like-for-like replacement comes next. Going from 100 or 150 to 200 amps costs more because the meter socket and the service conductors change with it. Blue Springs now inspects to the 2023 code, which can add ground-fault breakers a Kansas City quote would not include, so we price to the permit, not to a metro average, and give one flat number after seeing the panel.

Which electrical code does Blue Springs inspect panel work to?

The 2023 National Electrical Code, adopted with the 2024 International Codes, for permits applied for on or after June 1, 2026. Work permitted before then is inspected under the code in force when its permit was issued. Kansas City is still on the 2017 edition, and Raytown too; Independence and Lee’s Summit are on the 2023.

Do you pull permits in Blue Springs?

Yes. We pull Blue Springs electrical permits ourselves, from Codes Administration at 903 W. Main Street, and meet the city’s inspector. Our master electrician has been licensed since 1997.

Is a Federal Pacific panel really a problem?

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels have a long record of breakers that fail to trip, and many insurers and home inspectors flag them. If the label says Federal Pacific or FPE, or Zinsco, we recommend replacement rather than repair. If you are not sure what you have, send us a photo of the label before we come out.

Does my Blue Springs home have aluminum wiring?

If it was wired between about 1965 and 1973, it might. The Consumer Product Safety Commission puts single-strand aluminum branch wiring in homes from those years, and the earliest Blue Springs subdivisions overlap them. We can tell at the panel. It does not mean a rewire; it means every connection gets a connector rated for aluminum.

Do I need 200 amps?

If the house has central air, electric appliances or a hot tub, or you are adding an EV charger, almost certainly. A smaller house on gas with no plans to add load can be fine on 100. We will tell you honestly which you are.

How long will the power be off?

Usually four to eight hours for a panel change, inside the window Evergy gives us for the meter. On a service upgrade the city inspects before the job is closed out.

Can you add an EV charger circuit while you change the panel?

Yes, and it is the cheapest time to do it. Blue Springs is on Evergy, so the Evergy rebate can apply to the charger if you meet its terms. Our EV charger installation page covers the charger side.

Can you add a generator interlock at the same time?

Yes. We install generator inlets and interlocks for portable generators, and a panel change is the easiest time to add one. We do not install standby whole-house generators.

Can I replace my own panel in Blue Springs?

The city issues the permit and inspects the work; ask Codes Administration what it allows a homeowner to do. Either way the wires from the meter stay live with the main breaker off, and only Evergy can cut them at the meter, which is why a panel change is booked around the utility.

Is a breaker box replacement the same as a panel replacement?

It is. Breaker box is the everyday name for the electrical panel. In Blue Springs most of the breaker boxes we replace are 1970s and 80s originals, full or a Federal Pacific, and since June 2026 the new one is inspected to the 2023 code.
