One planned day: off, inspected, back on
Almost six in ten Raytown homes were built in the 1950s and 60s, when 60 or 100 amps and a dozen circuits ran a house. Those houses now carry central air, a second refrigerator and a dryer, often through the original service. A panel upgrade in Raytown is usually a service upgrade: the panel, the meter socket, the grounding and the wires from the utility, in one planned outage.
Raytown licenses every electrical contractor and issues electrical permits only to them; we pull Raytown permits and meet the city inspector. The city inspects to the 2017 National Electrical Code, the same edition as Kansas City, and it does not restore power until it has inspected the permitted work. So a service upgrade here has a fixed order: Evergy pulls the meter, we change the panel and the service, the city inspects, and Evergy reconnects: the power is normally back on the same day. We book the inspection when we pull the permit so the house is not dark overnight, and we tell you the window before the day.

Signs a Raytown service is due
- A fuse box, or a 60 amp main. Still in service in plenty of 1950s ranches. A fuse box is not unsafe by itself, but one with oversized fuses, or a 60 amp service carrying central air, is working past what it was built for.
- Federal Pacific or Zinsco on the label. The brands insurers and home inspectors ask about most, and common in houses upgraded once in the 1960s or 70s. Our old panel brands guide shows how to recognize them.
- Two-prong outlets through the house. No ground wire, which is normal for the era. On a service upgrade we bring the grounding up to date at the panel; the outlets are a separate decision, a new ground wire or GFCI protection where the code allows it.
- Lights dim when the air conditioner starts. Many circuits at once points to the service connection. Sometimes it is on Evergy’s side and the fix is theirs, not a new panel. We check which before quoting.
- A warm or buzzing breaker, or a scorched smell at the panel. Heat at a loose or burned connection. Call the same day rather than waiting for it to trip.
- You are adding an EV charger, a hot tub or a workshop circuit. A load calculation decides whether a 60 or 100 amp service can carry it. In a postwar house the answer is usually a service upgrade first.
What a panel or service upgrade costs in Raytown
Every job gets a flat price once we have seen it, before any work starts. These are the things that move it, and which way.
| Job | Relative cost | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Panel repair | Lowest | A breaker that will not hold, a burned lug, or the double-tap a buyer’s inspector found on a 1960s panel. Fixed once we know why it happened. |
| Like-for-like panel replacement | Baseline | Same service size, new panel and breakers. The answer for a Federal Pacific or Zinsco when the service behind it is already big enough, which in Raytown is the exception. |
| 60 or 100 → 200 amp service upgrade | Higher | New panel, meter socket, service entrance conductors and grounding, with Evergy’s meter pull and the city’s inspection in one planned outage. The most common job in Raytown’s 1950s and 60s houses. |
| Overhead mast and weatherhead | Add-on | Where the overhead service drop lands on a mast that is rusted, bent or too low. Usually replaced with the service rather than later. |
| Grounding and bonding brought up to date | Included | Part of every service upgrade: ground rods, the water pipe bond and a proper grounding electrode conductor. Postwar houses often have one rod or none. |
One flat price after we have looked at the panel, the meter, the mast and the grounding. The city’s inspection and Evergy’s meter appointment set the day, so we book both before quoting a date. Our Kansas City panel cost guide walks through what moves each of these rows.

What to Expect
Look at the whole service
Panel, meter socket, mast, service conductors and grounding. In a postwar house the panel is rarely the only thing that is undersized.
Panel or service, honestly
If a breaker or a lug is the problem, we fix that. If the 60 or 100 amp service is the problem, we say so and show you the load calculation.
Raytown permit
Raytown issues electrical permits to licensed contractors, and we pull ours. The permit is what gets the inspection scheduled.
Meter pull with Evergy
We book the disconnect and reconnect and tell you the outage window before the day.
Install, inspection, power back on
The panel, meter socket and service changed in one visit, the city inspects the same day where we can book it, and Evergy reconnects. We meet the inspector ourselves.
Questions We Get in Raytown
How much does a service upgrade cost in Raytown?
A repair is the least involved, and a like-for-like panel replacement comes next. Taking a 60 or 100 amp service to 200 costs more because the meter socket, the service conductors and usually the grounding change with it, and an overhead mast adds to that. We give one flat price after looking at all of it, built to the 2017 code Raytown inspects to.
Does an electrician need a Raytown license?
Yes. Raytown requires every electrical contractor to be licensed by the city, on top of a city business license, and only licensed contractors can get a permit unless you own the house, live in it and do the work yourself. We pull Raytown permits and meet the inspector.
Why does the city inspect before the power comes back on?
That is Raytown’s rule for permitted electrical work: power is not restored to the building until the city has inspected it. It makes a service upgrade a planned outage with a fixed order, meter pull, the work, the inspection, then reconnection. We schedule the inspection when we pull the permit so the house is not dark longer than it has to be.
Which electrical code does Raytown inspect to?
The 2017 National Electrical Code, alongside the 2018 International Residential Code. That is the same edition as Kansas City. Independence, Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit are on the 2023 edition, which asks for more ground-fault protection, so a quote built for one of those towns can include breakers a Raytown permit does not require.
Is a fuse box unsafe?
Not on its own. Fuses protect a circuit the same way breakers do. The problems are what usually comes with one: a 60 amp service carrying a modern house, fuses replaced with bigger ones so they stop blowing, and no room for new circuits. If any of those describe your house, the fix is a new service, not new fuses.
Do I need 200 amps?
If the house has central air, electric appliances or a dryer, or you are adding an EV charger or a hot tub, almost certainly, and in a 1950s ranch still on 60 amps there is no in-between worth doing. A smaller house on gas with no plans to add load can be fine on 100. We will tell you honestly which you are.
Will you ground my two-prong outlets during a service upgrade?
The service upgrade brings the grounding up to date at the panel: ground rods, the water pipe bond and the grounding electrode conductor. The outlets are a separate job: a new ground wire to each box where it can be run, or GFCI protection where the code allows it, which makes a two-prong outlet safe without a ground. We price it alongside the panel if you want both done together.
How long will the power be off?
Usually most of a working day for a service upgrade in Raytown, because the city inspects before the power is restored. We book Evergy’s meter pull and the inspection together and tell you the window before the day.
Can you add a generator interlock while you change the panel?
Yes. We install generator inlets and interlocks for portable generators, and a panel change is the easiest time to add one. We do not install standby whole-house generators.
Can I replace my own panel in Raytown?
Raytown issues electrical permits only to licensed contractors, with one exception: an owner who lives in the house and does the work personally. Even then the city inspects before power is restored, and only Evergy can cut the wires at the meter, which stay live with the main breaker off.
Is a breaker box the same as an electrical panel?
Yes. Breaker box, fuse box, electrical panel and service panel all mean the box where every circuit in the house starts. In Raytown it is often still a fuse box, and replacing it usually means a service upgrade, because the 60 or 100 amp service behind it is the real limit.
