Old Electrical Panel Brands, and Which Ones to Worry About
We open a lot of panels in Kansas City basements. Most are fine. A handful of old brands keep turning up on home inspection reports and insurance questions, and it helps to know which is which before somebody tells you the whole thing has to go.
Old is not the same as dangerous
A panel is a box of switches whose one job is to cut power when a circuit is overloaded or shorted. The brands on this page are the ones inspectors and insurers flag because of how their breakers or their bus connections have behaved over decades, not simply because they are old. A forty-year-old panel from a current manufacturer, in good condition and with room for the circuits you need, may have years left.
What matters is what is actually in yours. The brand name is usually printed on the label inside the panel door, and the breakers themselves often carry it too. If the label is gone, the breaker shape and the colour of the handles are usually enough for an electrician to tell. A photo of the open panel door is often all we need to tell you whether it is worth worrying about.

What electrical panel brands are dangerous?
The two that come up most on inspection reports are Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels and Zinsco or Sylvania-Zinsco panels, because of how their breakers have behaved over decades. Pushmatic, split-bus panels and fuse boxes are flagged more for age, capacity and insurance than for a known defect.
How do I tell how old my electrical panel is?
Check the label inside the panel door for the brand and model, and sometimes a date. Breakers can carry date codes too. A brand that is no longer made, fuses instead of breakers, or no single main breaker all point to an older panel.
Will insurance cover a house with a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel?
Some insurers will not write a new policy, and others ask for an inspection or a replacement within a set time. It varies by company, so ask yours directly. It is often what sets the timing for a replacement.
Does a home inspection fail because of the panel?
Home inspections do not pass or fail, but an FPE or Zinsco panel is one of the items most likely to be written up, and buyers and lenders often ask for it to be dealt with before closing.
Is a fuse box dangerous?
Not by itself. A fuse box protects properly when the correct fuse size is used. The risks are over-sized fuses put in to stop them blowing, and a service too small for a modern house. Most get replaced for capacity or insurance reasons.
Can you replace just the breakers instead of the whole panel?
For current brands, yes: a failed breaker is a small repair. For FPE and Zinsco, replacement breakers do not address the concern with the panel itself, so we recommend replacing the panel.
