Why a cord into an outlet is not the plan

The shortcut people find online is a cord with a plug on both ends, pushed into a dryer outlet. It works, right up until it does not. The unused plug has live pins. And with the main breaker on, it sends generator power back out through the meter onto the neighbourhood lines, where Evergy crews are working on the assumption they are dead. The code-compliant way does the same job safely: an inlet outside, a breaker in the panel, and an interlock that makes it physically impossible to have the main and the generator on at once. That is what the National Electrical Code requires of transfer equipment (NEC 702.5).

We install inlets and interlocks for portable generators. We do not install permanent standby generators, and we will tell you so rather than take that job.

Three parts, one rule

Power inlet, outside

A weatherproof inlet on the wall where the generator will sit. You plug the generator's cord in here. Nothing is live at the inlet until you start the generator.

Generator breaker, in the panel

A two-pole breaker that connects the inlet to your panel, sized to the inlet and the generator.

Interlock, on the panel cover

A sliding plate that physically blocks the generator breaker from turning on while the main breaker is on, and the reverse. Utility power and generator power can never meet.

Generator Hookup Questions

Is a generator interlock kit legal in Kansas City?

Yes, when it is the right one. The National Electrical Code requires transfer equipment that stops your generator and the utility from ever being connected at the same time (NEC 702.5). A mechanical interlock listed for your specific panel does exactly that. We install it with a permit where one is required, so it is inspected.

Can I just plug my generator into a dryer outlet?

No. Feeding a house through an outlet takes a cord with two male ends, which leaves live metal pins exposed, and it can send power back out through your meter onto the lines Evergy crews are working on during the outage. An inlet and interlock is the safe, legal version of the same idea.

Interlock kit or transfer switch: which should I get?

An interlock usually costs less and lets you power any circuit in the panel, as long as you keep the total within what the generator can supply. A manual transfer switch is wired to a set of circuits you pick in advance, so there is less to manage during an outage, but you are limited to those circuits. If your panel has no interlock kit made for it, a transfer switch is the route.

What size generator do I need?

Watts are volts times amps. A 30 amp inlet at 240 volts carries up to 7,200 watts; a 50 amp inlet carries up to 12,000. Most people want the furnace blower, refrigerator, sump pump, some lights and outlets, which a mid-size portable generator can usually cover if you do not run everything at once. Central air and electric ranges are usually where it runs out. We size the inlet to the largest 240 volt outlet on your generator.

Do you install standby (whole-house) generators?

No. We install inlets and interlocks for portable generators. Permanent standby generators are a different product, and we would rather tell you that than take a job we are not the right people for.

Where should the generator sit while it runs?

Outside, well away from the house. The CDC advises keeping a generator more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents, and never running one in a garage, even with the door open. We place the inlet so the cord can reach a safe spot, and a working carbon monoxide alarm inside is not optional.

What about a meter adapter that plugs in behind the meter?

Those devices sit on the utility's side of the service, so they need the utility's approval before anyone installs one. Ask Evergy before buying one. An inlet and interlock on your own panel does not involve the meter at all.
