Evergy’s $500 EV Charger Rebate: How to Actually Get It
Evergy will pay up to $500 toward a Level 2 charger install at your home. Most people who read that miss the condition that decides whether they get it, and a few miss the one that disqualifies them outright. Here is the whole thing, from a licensed Kansas City electrician who writes the invoices Evergy asks for.
What you need to qualify
- Up to $500 toward installing a 240 volt outlet (NEMA 14-50) or a hardwired Level 2 charger at your home
- Evergy customers in Missouri only
- You must be enrolled in a residential Time of Use rate, and stay on it for a year after you are paid
- Installed by a licensed electrician, with an itemized invoice
- An EV you own or lease, registered at that address
- Apply within six months of the install, and no later than March 31, 2027, or sooner if funding runs out
- One rebate per residence. Payment takes up to eight weeks

The rebate only pays on a Time of Use plan
Evergy’s terms pay the rebate only if you are enrolled in a residential Time of Use rate, and you agree to stay on it for a year. Missouri customers choose from these plans. Rates below are Evergy’s published Missouri Metro energy charges as of September 16, 2026, before taxes, the fuel adjustment and other charges.

What that means for charging: a Level 2 charger at 32 amps draws about 7.7 kW, so four hours adds roughly 31 kWh. On Nights & Weekends in summer, that energy costs about $1.73 between midnight and 6 am, and about $10.38 if the same charge runs from 4 to 8 pm on a weekday. Set the car or charger to start after midnight and the plan tends to work in your favour. How to claim it without a rejected application
Check you qualify
An Evergy residential account in Missouri that is not in collections or on an active payment agreement, and an EV you own or lease registered at the address. Renting? You need the landlord's consent.
Enroll in a Time of Use plan
Pick a time-based plan in your Evergy account. Evergy's EV team (816-897-7562, EVadvisor@evergy.com) can confirm the plan you choose counts before you commit.
Have the panel checked
A Level 2 circuit needs room in your panel. Many newer homes have it; older ones may need a panel upgrade first. We check before quoting, so the number does not change halfway through.
Licensed installation
A dedicated 240 volt circuit of 40 amps or more: a NEMA 14-50 outlet or a hardwired charger.
Get the right invoice
Itemized, showing the cost, the date and the type of outlet or charger installed, with the electrician's license information. Ours are written that way by default.
Apply, then stay on the plan
Apply online within six months with the invoice and your EV registration. Allow up to eight weeks for payment, and stay on Time of Use for a year afterwards.
Who does not qualify, and the question nobody answers
Not eligible for this rebate
- Evergy customers in Kansas, including most of Overland Park and Olathe. The residential terms cover Missouri.
- Independence, which is served by Independence Power & Light, not Evergy.
- Accounts in collections or on an active payment agreement.
- A second rebate at the same residence.
- New construction: builders have a separate $250-per-home developer rebate.
“I already installed it myself. Can an electrician sign off?”
Not honestly. Evergy requires the outlet or charger to be installed by a certified electrician, with an invoice showing the cost and date of that installation. An electrician who writes that invoice for work they did not do is putting their license on the line for your $500.
What we can do is inspect the circuit, fix anything that is not right, and invoice the work we actually perform. Whether that counts toward the rebate is Evergy’s decision, so ask their EV team before you book it.

Evergy EV Rebate Questions
Do I have to switch to a Time of Use plan to get the Evergy rebate?
Yes. Evergy's terms pay the rebate only to customers enrolled in a residential Time of Use rate, and you agree to stay on it for one year after the rebate is paid. Leave early and Evergy can take back a prorated share. The flat Standard Tier plan is not a time-based plan.
Is a Time of Use plan cheaper if I have an EV?
It can be, if most of your charging happens overnight and you keep heavy use out of the 4 to 8 pm weekday peak. On the Nights & Weekends plan the overnight energy price is a fraction of the peak price. Does a NEMA 14-50 outlet qualify, or do I need a hardwired charger?
Either one. Evergy's terms accept a dedicated 240 volt circuit of 40 amps or more, including a NEMA 14-50 outlet, or a hardwired Level 2 charger. An outlet is usually the lower-cost install; a hardwired charger is tidier and some chargers require it.
How long do I have to apply?
Six months from the date of installation, and no later than March 31, 2027. Funding is limited, so the program can also close earlier than that. Evergy says to allow up to eight weeks for payment.
Can renters get the Evergy EV charger rebate?
Yes, if you are the Evergy residential customer at that address and your landlord or the homeowner has consented to the 240 volt installation. The terms make you certify that consent when you apply.
Does the rebate apply in Overland Park, Olathe or Independence?
Not this one. Evergy's residential EV charging rebate terms cover Evergy customers in Missouri. Most of Johnson County is Evergy's Kansas territory, and Independence is served by Independence Power & Light, not Evergy. Businesses are different: Evergy's commercial charging rebates include Kansas.
I already installed my charger myself. Can an electrician give me a receipt?
