What moves the price of an EV charger install

The Kansas City parts nobody writes down
- Evergy pays up to $500, on one condition. The rebate is real, but it only pays customers on a residential Time of Use rate who stay on it for a year, with a licensed electrician's itemized invoice and an EV registered at the address. - Kansas City enforces the 2017 NEC. The city adopts the 2017 National Electrical Code, with a 2024 draft of the electrical article in progress. It sets the breaker, conductor and GFCI rules an inspector will hold the charger circuit to. Source.
- The permit is the contractor's to pull. A dedicated 240 volt circuit is permitted work in Kansas City, and permits go to licensed contractors unless you own and live in the home and do it yourself. The rebate needs a licensed electrician's invoice anyway. Source.
- The garage decides the day. Kansas City housing stock splits cleanly here. Attached garage on a newer panel is a short job. A 1920s Brookside or Waldo house with the garage at the back of the lot means a trench, and sometimes a service upgrade first.

How much does EV charger installation cost in Kansas City?
Panel capacity and trenching distance account for nearly all of it. An attached garage with a modern panel is the baseline job. A detached garage adds a trench. An older home without spare capacity needs a panel upgrade first, which is the biggest single factor. Evergy's rebate comes off the total afterwards.
Is a NEMA 14-50 outlet cheaper than a hardwired charger?
The outlet is the least expensive version and takes the Evergy rebate the same way. The trade-off is that a plug-in charger on a 14-50 is limited to 40 amps, where a hardwired unit can run higher if your panel supports it. Most cars charging overnight never notice the difference.
Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector?
Yes, and ChargePoint, Emporia, Grizzl-E, Ford Charge Station Pro or whatever came with the car. They all land on the same 240 volt circuit; the mounting and the amperage setting change, not the wiring.
Does the Evergy rebate cover the charger itself?
It pays up to $500 toward the installed cost of a Level 2 charger or a 240 volt outlet at your home. The requirement people miss is the Time of Use rate, which you must enroll in and stay on for a year.
How long does the install take?
One day for most. Two if a detached garage needs a trench, or longer if the panel is being upgraded at the same time.
Do I need a permit for an EV charger?
Yes. It is a new dedicated circuit, so it is permitted and inspected work in Kansas City, and the permit goes to the licensed contractor.
