The box is the job
A ceiling fan is not a heavy light. It hangs, and then it moves, for years. The National Electrical Code treats it differently for that reason: a fan has to be supported by an outlet box listed for ceiling fan support, or by a brace independent of the box. A standard light box is not that, no matter how solid it feels on the ladder.
This is why “can you just swap my light for a fan?” is rarely a swap. Nine times in ten the box changes, and on a finished ceiling that means working from the attic or opening a small area to brace it properly. It is also why fans that were hung the easy way start to wobble a year later: the fan is slowly working the box loose.
What moves the price of a fan job
The fan you bought matters far less than what is in the ceiling above it.

Not every fan needs replacing. These are the four we get called about, and what each one usually turns out to be.
The fan wobbles
A bent blade bracket, mismatched blades, or a box that was never rated for a fan and has worked loose. Balancing clips fix the first two. A loose box is a repair, and it is the one worth doing before it gets worse.
It hums or runs at one speed
Usually the capacitor in the switch housing, sometimes the speed switch itself. Both are replaceable on most fans, and cheaper than a new fan.
The pull chain or remote died
Pull chain switches wear out, and the remote receiver tucked in the canopy is a common failure point. Both are parts we can change.
The light works, the fan does not
Or the reverse. That splits the problem in two: one half of the fan is not getting power or its switch has failed, which is quicker to find than most people expect.

Look at the ceiling first
What is up there decides the price: a fan-rated box, a plain light box, or nothing at all. We check before quoting, not after.
Pick the drop and the size
Blade span for the room, and downrod length for the ceiling height. On a vaulted ceiling this is what keeps the fan quiet and the blades clear.

Yes, with a downrod sized to the slope and the height, and a canopy rated for the angle. Vaulted ceilings are common in Northland homes, and getting the drop right is what keeps the blades clear and the fan quiet. Height and access decide the ladder or lift, which is the part that adds time.
My fan's pull chain and remote stopped working. Repair or replace?
Worth a look either way. A dead pull chain switch or a failed capacitor is a repair. A remote receiver in the canopy is a common failure point and is usually replaceable. If the motor itself is going and the fan is a builder-grade unit from twenty years ago, replacing it costs less than chasing parts.
Do you install attic fans?
Yes. Gable and roof-mounted attic fans are a wiring job as much as a fan job: a dedicated circuit, a thermostat or humidistat control, and a safe way to kill power to it for service. We also handle the fan circuit when a roofer sets the unit itself.
Do I need a permit to install a ceiling fan?
Swapping a fixture for a fan on an existing circuit generally does not need one in Kansas City. A new circuit, a new fan location, or an attic fan on its own circuit generally does, and we pull it.
