The panel decides the job, not the charger
Almost every EV charger question comes back to the same two facts: how much spare capacity your panel has, and how far the charger sits from it. A modern 200 amp panel in an attached garage is the straightforward version. An older home with a full panel, or a detached garage at the back of the lot, is a different day’s work, and no honest quote can be given without looking at both.
The other half is sizing. A 48 amp charger needs a 60 amp circuit and the capacity to back it, and plenty of houses are better served by a 32 or 40 amp install that charges just as fully overnight. We work out what your car, your panel and your driving actually need rather than selling you the biggest number.
What moves the price of an EV charger installation
We do not publish a dollar figure we cannot stand behind. What we can tell you is which parts of the job move the number.

How much does EV charger installation cost?
Panel capacity and distance account for nearly all of it. A charger beside a modern panel is the cheapest version; a detached garage that needs a trench, or an older home that needs its panel upgraded first, is the expensive one. We quote flat after checking both, and the Evergy rebate comes off the total for Evergy customers.
Do I need an electrician to install an EV charger?
For a hardwired Level 2 charger or a new 240V outlet, yes. It is a dedicated circuit off your panel, it needs a permit in most of the metro, and the Evergy rebate requires a licensed electrician’s itemized invoice. A plug-in charger on an existing, correctly sized outlet is the exception.
How long does it take?
Most installs are a single day. A panel upgrade or a trench to a detached garage adds time, and we will tell you which one yours is before starting.
What size charger should I get?
Bigger is not automatically better. A 48 amp charger needs a 60 amp circuit and the panel capacity to support it. For most drivers a 32 or 40 amp install fills the battery overnight just as completely, and costs less to install.
Can you install a charger if my panel is full?
Often yes, and there are a few ways: a panel upgrade, a sub-panel, or a load-management device that shares capacity with the rest of the house. Which one makes sense depends on the panel and how much headroom you actually have.
Do you install a NEMA 14-50 outlet instead?
Yes, and it is a good option if your car came with a portable charger. It qualifies for the Evergy rebate the same as a hardwired charger, and it leaves the charger portable if you move.
