






A lot of property owners with detached metal buildings are stuck in the same situation - the structure exists, but it has no reliable power. No dedicated panel, no proper service entrance, no real capacity for tools or lighting. Running an extension cord from the house is not a long-term solution. A properly installed overhead service with its own load center is the right answer, and that is exactly what this job called for.
Here is what we were working with. The metal building needed its own service drop from the utility, which meant installing a rigid conduit mast and weatherhead at the building, running the service entrance conductors correctly, and making sure everything met current NEC clearance and support requirements. On the house side, we installed a matching conduit riser so the utility connection point stayed clean and code-compliant. Both riser installations were done with properly supported rigid conduit and weatherproof fittings - no shortcuts.
Inside the building, we mounted a new load center on a plywood backer board, landed the feeder, and installed the main breaker along with branch breakers sized for the space. The panel gives the owner real capacity now - tools, lighting, future equipment - whatever ends up going into that building. It is also fully expandable, so adding circuits down the road is straightforward.
